Charlie Bartlett (Cert 15)

Once again proving that this is the year of the "school" movie (Juno and Son of Rambow), Charlie Bartlett gives us a new take on the Teenage Rebel!

We are introduced to our hero Charlie Bartlett (Anton Yelchin, Alpha Dog) who is once again in trouble at his very expensive prep school. He's been making fake ID's for an impressive profit.

His alcoholic mother (Hope Davis, About Schmidt) is forced to send him to a public high school, as he has been thrown out of all the other posh ones. Charlie is very much the optomist and tries to fit in, but finds it a very different world to the well off one he's used to. He is soon getting ruffed up by the locals, but rather than give in, he ends up creating a partnership with his bully Murphey (Tyler Hilton - played Elvis Presley in Walk the Line!)

The scheming Charlie soon sets up stall (litterally, in the gents!) as the school shrink... dolling out advice and drugs (that he manages to convince his own shrink he needs) and making a tidy profit.

Principle Gardner (Robert Downey Jnr - Iron Man) has trouble trying to deal with this new character in the school... especially when he takes an interest in his daughter!

This is the first time out for writer Gustin Nash and director Jon Poll and they manage to do a great job of tackling a well worn subject. Downey Jnr and Hope Davis are both excellent... but the real star is Anton Yelchin. Lets hope he goes from strength to strength... as he will soon be playing the young Pavel Chekov in the new Star Trek movie.

Scores: 4/5
