Think back to a long hot summer in the early 1980's... When fashion was, urm, big hair and drain pipe trousers. My worst nightmare would be a trip back to school, but thats where Garth Jennings and Richard Goldsmith (Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy) would like to take us!
We meet Will (Bill Milner), the son of Plymouth Bretherens, and full of imagination, sitting outside his class room while the rest watch a video. While waiting, further up the corridor, trouble maker Lee Carter is once again waiting outside the heads office for his next punishment.
Carter, takes an interest in Will's carefully crafted exercise book, and in the process of stealing it, they both knock over a bowl of fish!
Lee Carter decides to take the punishment for both of them - for the price of Will's late fathers watch - but then actually does a runner himself!
Will, still thinking he owes Lee Carter a favour, finds himself at the end of another project, to make a movie.
Will has never seen any TV, but while over Lee Carters house he gets to watch a dodgy copy of Rambo, and it changes his life. He imagines his father is Rambo and has been captured and its down to Will to save him!
This becomes the theme for the film, with the need for some life endagering big stunts.
Then follows a wonderful attempt to record a movie that slowly involves more and more people. Including visiting French students who seem to take over the school. At the same time, Will is struggling to fit in at home, with pressure from the bretheren and we get to see the reasons why Lee is such a delinquent.
There is a great cameo from Eric Sykes and the film has reintroduced "Skill" to my vocab.
A magical film.
I have to say that I'm really dissapointed with the certification (Beowulf was also a 12!) why this wasn't a PG I really don't know.
Best film of 2008 - won awards at Sundance last year.
'Close To Me'. Performed by The Cure. Taken from the end titles of 'Son of Rambo', originally released on the album, 'The Head on the Door'. FICTION RECORDS.
