I really thought my GCSE English skills were going to be challenged with this film. After all, it is a very long time since I've looked at any old English!
Thankfully Robert Zemeckis has kindly used a modern interpretation so that we don't have to over stretch our brain cells.
He keeps quite close to the original trail with a clever story woven through to make a better sense of it. You can't say its the "real Beowulf" with his darker personal story - but thats cause (as far as I know) dragons don't really exist!
The decision to do it all in CGI is an interesting one. They haven't yet perfected it enough to pass as real... but they are getting very close. I just wonder if they should wait until they can pull it off, before actually trying to do an entire feature of real people in CGI. It currently ends up looking like an oversized video game. If you have the likes of Anthony Hopkins playing a part, why not actually use his real self rather than create a whole CGI one that looks wooden and a bit, well, wrong!
The film is a gory one, and it seemed to me that some in the cinema were a bit to young, bringing in to question the 12a certificate again. It should probably have been a 15.
That said, it is a great yomping yarn that will have you uttering the phrase "Monstaaa" for weeks afterwards.
