Stardust, (Cert PG)

After all the publicity of films like Ratatouille and The Kingdom it has been a pleasant surprise to find a film that is absolutely magical and very English to boot.

Stardust is a fairytale of witches and magic, Princes and Princesses, Pirates and Stars. We follow the young Tristan as he tries to woo a beautiful girl with a fallen star they see come down one romantic evening.

With the help of a magic candle, he finds his star, but is surprised when it turns out to be a grumpy Clare Danes! Problems set in for Tristan almost immediately. The King of the magical land of Stormhold has set his competitive sons the challenge of bring him a ruby that the star just happens to be wearing. To top it all, there are three witches wanting to use the heart of the star to bring them imortality.

Will he survive and protect his star as the bad guys get closer and closer, I cannot possibly divulge, but it is of course, a fairy tale!

There are fantastic performances from Charlier Cox, Michelle Pfeiffer (with a slight dodgy accent) and Robert Deniro. In fact Deniro's character has a wonderful twist that made me think it must have taken the director Matthew Vaughn quite some talking in to.

There is the obligatory perfermance from people like Ricky Gervais and Peter O'Toole, plus some wonderful cameos from David Walliams and some of our funiest sketch show actors (including the guys from Green Wing!)

One interesting fact is that one of the cowriters, Jane Goldman, is in fact Jonathan Ross' wife!

This gets a 5/5... it could be the new Mary Poppins if you ask me!
